A Call Back to Discipleship

ree

There’s something sacred about a table.

Not just the wood and chairs around it, but the people seated together—sharing meals, stories, struggles, and most importantly, faith. Over the last few months, the Lord began stirring my heart with a quiet but clear conviction: This is the season to open your home. This is the time to gather women at the table.

I prayed. I fasted. I listened.

And God confirmed it—not with a loud sign, but with a deep peace and urgency to create a space for discipleship. A space for truth. A space for healing. A space for women to sit, laugh, cry, pray, and grow in God—together.

So I obeyed.

I set the table with care, prayed over every seat, and invited the women God had placed on my heart. We gathered in my living room and experienced something holy. The Lord met us—not just during the worship or the teaching—but in the simplicity of shared fruit, communion, and even between sips of orange juice and journal decorating. There were tears. There was joy. There was sisterhood. And there was Jesus—right in the center.

This wasn’t just an event.

It was a return to something we’ve lost in today’s fast-paced, filtered world: biblical discipleship.

The Counterfeit Connection

We live in a time where “connection” is often reduced to likes, stories, comments, and DMs. But what we’re experiencing is often counterfeit. It’s a curated closeness that lacks depth. We scroll through lives instead of walking alongside them. We “heart” posts but ignore heartache. In doing so, we’ve drifted away from one of the most essential components of the Christian life—true, authentic discipleship.

Jesus never called us to follow Him alone.

He walked with the disciples. He taught them. He corrected them. He loved them deeply and lived among them. His command before ascending to Heaven wasn’t, “Post more encouraging quotes,” but this:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you…”

—Matthew 28:19-20 (ESV)

Discipleship is not optional. It is mission critical.

And it starts at our tables. In our homes. In our living rooms. On our lunch breaks. In our car rides. Wherever there’s a willing heart and the truth of God’s Word, discipleship can begin.

Why We Must Return

Jesus modeled discipleship as a way of life, not a church program. He invited people to follow Him—and following Him meant transformation. It meant accountability. It meant love in action.

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

—John 13:35 (NIV)

Discipleship teaches us how to love like Christ, how to walk in obedience, and how to carry each other’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). It is the very heart of community in the Kingdom of God.

In our gathering, God reminded us: discipleship isn’t fancy, it’s faithful. It’s showing up. Being present. Walking with someone through their journey and pointing them back to Jesus over and over again.

Your Turn

I want to challenge you, dear reader:

  • Who are you walking with?

  • Who are you discipling—or allowing to disciple you?

It’s not about having all the answers. It’s about being willing to open your heart, your Bible, and maybe even your home.

Because someone is waiting for your “yes.” Someone needs the space you’ll create. And God is calling His daughters—and sons—back to the table of fellowship, growth, and truth.

Let’s return.

Let’s walk together in love.

Let’s hold each other accountable for the glory of God.

Let’s make disciples.

Father, thank You for calling us back to the heart of discipleship. Thank You for reminding us that we are not meant to walk this faith journey alone. Stir our hearts with compassion for those around us. Help us to be bold, to open our lives and homes, and to live as true followers of Christ—discipling others as we go. May Your love be seen through our obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen
